What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, short for "June Nineteenth," is a holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas and the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th each year and marks the date when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, announcing that all enslaved people in the state were free. This event, occurring nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, signaled the end of slavery in Texas and was a significant moment for many African Americans.
